What is Home Health Physical Therapy?
When you’re recovering from an injury, illness or surgery, it can mean that leaving your home is not a choice you have, or a safe option, for that matter. Therefore, Home Health is when a physical therapist can come to your home for your physical therapy sessions.
The physical therapist will accommodate any equipment needed for your home session. The sessions will focus on your precise needs including stretches, strengthening, and daily task training to make sure you recover properly and safely in your home. We may even make recommendations on changes in your home such as eliminating unsafe rugs, fitting grab bars in the bathroom and/or shower, or railings in/out of the house.
How do you qualify for home health physical therapy?
Home Health physical therapy is reserved for patients who are unable to leave the house to attend a physical therapy clinic. This can occur for a variety of reasons, including:
- Your condition is acute or severe and leaving the home exhibits a health risk
- Your functional mobility is limited and you cannot travel to therapy
- You lack adequate transportation or access to transportation to get to your physical therapy clinic
Most physical therapy services in the United States are covered by insurance, and certain rules apply to home-care physical therapy to be covered by your insurance carrier. For most insurance plans, physical therapy in your home will be a covered service if you can display significant restrictions to you leaving your home. These restrictions may be due to your injury or illness or due to your inability to travel.
If you choose to have physical therapist at home just because it is convenient for you, your insurance company may not cover the service and you will have to pay for the therapy yourself.
